Our Story

Mel’s was founded in 1998 by Elaine Walters in Kingston, Jamaica. The business started as just an idea in Elaine’s kitchen. The tasty ginger beer quickly grew to be a local favorite, sold in most major grocery stores in Kingston. Now, Mel’s is on a mission to bring the joy of traditional ginger to the the rest of the world.

Mel’s is a tribute to a family of kind and strong women–it’s even in the name! The M represents Monica, Elaine’s mother who passed away in 2014. The E is for Elaine herself, and the L is for Elaine’s daughter Lorrette who now lives in Brooklyn, New York.
